Sport Special Initiatives Grant Supports MacDonald-Headingley Recreation

MHRD Winter Active Feb 2010Sport Manitoba's Community Development grants are supporting our communities.

The MacDonald-Headingley Recreation District (MHRD)recently received a Sport Special Initiatives grant of $500 in support of their Winter Active Olympic 2010 event.    368 students representing six of the schools within the RM of MacDonald participated in the event held on February 17 in Oak bluff.

In advance of the event, each class was assigned a country and given the materials to make a flag of that country.  As countries, they traveled through a variety of stations representing "Olympic/Paralympic" events such as bobsledding, snoccer, smooshing, road hockey, broomball, sledge hockey, jam pail curling, snowshoe golf and more.   MHRD would like to thank the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities for the instruction they provided at the sledge hockey station.

Sanford Collegiate Leadership students provided assistance with the facilitation of the stations and the evaluating of each team's performance.  Teams earned points towards medals for overall behavior, teamwork, olympism and sportsmanship/fairplay.  The day also included a complementary lunch sponsored by Starbuck Credit Union.

Manitoba's sport delivery system involves thousands of different provincial and community based sport organizations working to develop greater participation and to support the achievement of excellence throughout the entire continuum of sport.  Sport Manitoba's support is focused on addressing the needs of Manitobans at all levels of participation in sport from grassroots/recreational participants through to developmental and high perfomrance.

Manitoba Foundation for Sports Scholarships -
Deadline April 23, 2010

The Manitoba Foundation for Sports scholarship program administrated by Sport Manitoba was established to support young athletes of Sport Manitoba partners, who continue to participate in amateur sport while pursuing a post secondary education on a full time basis.

The program's emphasis is placed on athletes who have competed at the provincial level or higher during 2009, and who have maintained a high level of academic standing, while showing a commitment to amateur sport through their involvement in coaching, officiating and volunteer activities. The number of scholarships awarded annually will vary, based on the number of applicants and the funds available for distribution. Preference will be given to athletes attending university or college in Manitoba and enrolled in a related field, pursing a career in sport.

Scholarships are awarded to graduating high school students entering a post secondary institution and to students in their second or subsequent year in a post secondary institution. The top applicant in each category will be awarded the Manitoba Foundation for Sports Milt Stegall Scholarship.

Deadline for Applications for the 2010/2011 academic year is April 23, 2010.

Other scholarship amounts will be dependent on annual funds available for distribution.
