May is Physical Activity Month

Heart and Stroke Foundation LogoOnly 30 percent of adults in Manitoba get the basic amount of activity required for health, and as few as 10 percent of children and teens in this province get the amount of recommended physical activity. Make the change to physical activity by challenging yourself and your family to get active whenever and wherever you can during Physical Activity Month in May.

Physical activity is good medicine! If a doctor could prescribe one pill to control blood pressure and cholesterol, improve bone density and help prevent heart disease and stroke, that pill would be physical activity.

Physical Activity Month is sponsored by the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. For more information, please contact Justin Mikulik at 1-888-473-4636 or jmikulik@heartandstroke.mb.ca. More information is also available at www.heartandstroke.mb.ca.

Hey Kids...Get Hooked on Fishing!!

The Fishing League is run by the Manitoba Wildlife Federation, which is a non-profit organization.  The League is a program for youth between 9 - 15 years of age.  The goal is to introduce them to fishing through an organized league similar to hockey, baseball or other recreational activities.  The rules are designed to encourage participation by young anglers at all skill levels.  This friendly competition allows teams of 6-8 kids from communities across the province to participate in a healthy, self-esteem building, outdoor activity.  The kids can track how they're doing, and upload pictures and stories at the Manitoba Wildlife Federation website .

The 2011 season registration deadline is May 20.  Fishing starts May 23rd and ends the last week of June.

Click here for the brochure and poster for further information.   Lots of kids want to participate.  The challenge is to find coaches to volunteer their time.  The time commitment is taking the kids fishing for 2 hours, once a week for 6 weeks and submitting their scores.  They can fish from a boat or from shore and even at stocked ponds.  The idea is to just get them outside, learning to fish.

Registration is $30 per child which covers the kids under the Federation's insurance and also goes towards the mailing costs for the Outdoor Edge magazine and certificates of participation and trophies they receive.

If finding fishing gear is an issue, free fishing gear for the kids can be obtained through the Reel Solutions program

Get active!  Get hooked on fishing!!
