2012 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games

Swan Valley    July 15 - 21, 2012

 

The Power Smart Manitoba Games are the province's largest ongoing multi-sport program bringing together participants from across the province. The Games are held every two years and alternate between summer and winter sports events. Each set of Games involve upwards of 10,000 athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers.

 

Below you will find information on each sport that will be included in the 2012 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games.  Each sport will be offering athletes the opportunity to work with skilled coaches to help develop their sport skills.

Mission Staff Needed

Sport Manitoba Central Region is currently looking to complete their roster of Mission Staff for the 2012 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games.  What is the role of a Mission Staff you ask?  The role of the mission staff is to support the sport team to which they are assigned and for Team Central in general. The mission staff is there to enable the manager to manage the team, who should in turn, be there to enable the coach to coach. The mission staff may be asked to perform all kinds of tasks before and during the Games in order to help things run more smoothly.  The main function of the mission staff is one of liaison and communication with the Host Society and the regional teams. They also are expected to troubleshoot if any problems arise, to ensure that everyone's needs (for competing at the Games) are met or that they are addressed and to be moral support (cheerleading) for the athletes, coaches and managers.

 

 We are currently looking for Mission Staff for the following sports:

 

Phase One (July 15-18, 2012)

Phase Two (July 18-21, 2012)

Baseball

Basketball (Male Team)

Basketball (Female Team)

Cycling

Sailing

Golf

Triathlon

Athletics (Track & Field)

AGE GROUP:

Bantam (Born in 1999-2000)

Midget (Born in 1997-1998)

 

TEAM SIZE: 20 Males and 20 Females (+/- 2) and 5 Coaching Staff

 

QUALIFYING MEET: May or June 2012.  Will be combined with the Central Region Hershey Track Meet.

Baseball

AGE GROUP: 14U (Born in 1998 or later)

 

TEAM SIZE: 13 Athletes and 3 Coaching Staff

 

TRYOUTS:

Initial ID Camp - Saturday, June 18th in Morden

Fall ID Camp - To Be Determined

Basketball

AGE GROUP: U16 (Born in 1996)

 

CATEGORIES: Male Team and Female Team

 

COMPETITION FORMATE: 5 on 5

 

TEAM SIZE: 12 Athletes and 3 Coaching Staff

 

TRYOUTS: Selection Camps in the spring of 2012.  Finale team selections in May 2012.

Cycling

AGE GROUPS: 13U and 15U

 

TEAM SIZE: 4 Males and 4 Females (2 from each age group) and 2 coaching staff.

 

TRYOUTS: Still to be determined.

Golf

AGE GROUP: 15 & Under

 

TEAM SIZE: 4 Males & 4 Female Athletes and 2 Coaching Staff

 

TEAM SELECTION: Selection will be based on 8 rounds of competitions.  Dates and locations TBA.  Finale selections will be made in 2012.

Sailing

AGE GROUP:

10 - 14 Prams

13 - 17 Laser  

 

TEAM SIZE: 2 Males & 2 Females (1 in each category) and 2 Coaching Staff

 

QUALIFYING REGATTA: Saturday, September 3, 2011 @ Winnipeg Sailing Centra (Fort Whyte Alive)

 

EQUIPMENT: Prams will be provided by Sail Manitoba.  Please bring your own Lasers.

Soccer

AGE GROUP: U13 as of January 1, 2012.  Born 1999 or later.

 

CATEGORIES: Male team and female team.

 

TEAM SIZE:  18 athletes and 3 coaching staff (on each team).

 

TRYOUTS: Initial tryouts occurred on May 26th but there will be additional opportunities to tryout for the teams.  To register for future tryouts, please contact:

Softball

AGE GROUP: Born 1998-1999.  Pee Wee Category  of 2012 - Under 14 years of age prior to January 1, 2012.

 

TEAM SIZE: 15 athletes and 3 coaching staff  

  

TRYOUTS: September 18th in Portage La Prairie and January 22nd in Southport: 10am - 4pm.  Registration begins at 9:30am.  Registration fee is $15.00 per player per camp.  Registration forms must be completed and submitted by September 16th.

Swimming

AGE GROUPS & CATEGORIES:

Female Youth: Born in 2001-2000

Female Junior: Born in 1999-1998

Male Youth: Born in 2000-1999

Male Junior: Born in 1998-1997

 

TEAM SIZE: 16 athletes (4 in each category) and 4 coaching staff. 

  

TEAM SELECTION: Swimmers will be provisionally selected regionally, based on top point scores in their single best swim over the Summer of 2011.  There will be 5 opportunities to qualify:

July 10 - Neepawa

July 24 - Beausejour

August 7 - Grad Prix #3 (location TBA)

August 14 - Treherne Grand Prix

August 21 - Winkler Grad Prix Championships (mujst have participated in previous competition)

  

If you wish to p-articipate in a Grand Prix Swim Meet you must be registered with Swim Manitoba as part of a Swim Club.  Currently, in the Central region there are 4 summer swim clubs: Treherne, Pilot Mound, Manitou and Winkler.  Please contact Swim Manitoba at swim.summer@sportmanitoba.ca if you have any questions.

Triathlon

AGE GROUPS:

12 and 13 years of age as of December 31, 2012 (Born in 2000 or 1999)

14 and 15 years of age as of December 31, 2012 (Born in 1998 or 1997)

 

CATEGORIES: Male and Female

 

TEAM SIZE: 12 Athletes (3 males and 3 females in each category) and 2 Coaching Staff

 

TEAM IDENTIFICATION: Athletes who are interested in representing their region in the sport of triathlon are encouraged to contact the Triathlon Manitoba office for more information.

 

TEAM SELECTION: Regional team selection will be based on a number of factors including:

  • Results from the 2011 Kids of Steel race opportunities
  • Regional team training opportunities
  • Results from the 2012 Kids of Steel race opportunities

Final team selections will take place on or before June 11, 2012.
